Whether the hot tub cover is soft or hard, there are times when the cover will need to be repaired, especially after years of use. The soft hot tub covers usually require repairs in terms of tears that are obtained when an unexpected tree branch or rock goes through it, or when the cover becomes damaged through the sun’s rays and various weather conditions breaking down the materials in the cover and making it brittle. Hard hot tub covers usually take longer to need repair, but when they do, individuals usually think that the entire cover needs to be replaced rather than just repairing the old one.

Hot Tub Cover Repair: Do It Yourself

Most of the hard hot tub covers have a vinyl cover, under which is the Styrofoam material which is supposed to help to insulate the hot tub. If the vinyl gets torn in either a soft or hard hot tub cover, the repair can usually best be made through the use of duct tape. Luckily, the duct tape now comes in a variety of colors rather than the bright metallic gray that it was found in previously. Now, individuals can match the color of the vinyl of the hot tub cover to a roll of easy to find duct tape and repair the tear. When repairing it, the hot tub cover should be removed from the hot tub for a period of time to allow the surface of the vinyl to become completely dry. If the cover is a soft cover, both sides should be completely dry before applying the duct tape to both sides of the cover. If it is a hard cover, the repair can only be made to one side of the vinyl unless the individual wants to completely remove the covering from the Styrofoam insides of the cover so that the tape can be applied to two sides, creating a more efficient and long lasting repair.

If the hot tub cover is beyond repair, another vinyl shell can usually be obtained from the hot tub cover company. However, this is usually costly and the individual will usually be able to find another cover for approximately the same price. If the Styrofoam becomes damaged inside of a hard hot tub cover, the repair can often be made by buying sheets of Styrofoam of the same width from a local home improvement store. The sheets can easily be cut down to size and inserted into the hot tub cover so create a ‘new’ hot tub cover in place of the old, damage one.
